| Over paid, over sexed and… over Attleborough or The Friendly Invasion
82 years ago United States Army & Airforce (USAAF) personnel arrived in the locale and occupied three airbases which had been built at Deopham Green, Snetterton and Old Buckenham. The United States had entered WWII after the Japanese attacked their Pacific Base at Pearl Harbour (or Harbor in American spelling).
Although Norfolk was not immune to the predations of the Luftwaffe as Norwich, Great Yarmouth and even Attleborough had been bombed. There were also many foreign military personnel from other European and Southern Hemisphere in East Anglia who had been here since 1940; but the influx of around 15,000 young Americans was rather different.
And life in Attleborough and the surrounding area changed. Just as it had in other parts of East Anglia. In Eastern England generally there is plenty of flat agricultural land and this was ideal for aircraft to take off and land. But before the aircraft could be accommodated the land needed to stop growing food and, instead, to grow Nissan huts and canteens and hangars for aircraft and all the other buildings needed to maintain the personnel and aircraft.
They brought about 2,000 extra vehicles and many, many bicycles. They also brought the sort of things that hadn’t been seen for a long time in a country accustomed to rationing. They brought cigarettes, coffee, gum, “candy” and, of course, their dollars and nylon stockings.
Attleborough Railway Station was also important as many armaments arrived by rail and were then collected and distributed to the local bases.
We have much more information to share about the Friendly Invasion and can give more insight into how the lives of the American servicemen (and they were pretty well all men) impacted on our Town. To find out, we would be delighted if you would join us for the re-run of our October 2013 presentation “Overpaid, Oversexed, and Over Attleborough”. This will be on Sunday 19 October 2025 at 2.30 pm in Attleborough Town Hall. Our presentation will be illustrated and contain some soundbites from folk who were children during the war. Although many of these people are no longer with us, their memories remain with the sound of their voices.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS ‘CREATIVITY UNWRAPPED’ Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community led festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations around the Country. Every year in September it brings people together and this year’s theme is ‘Celebration of Creativity’. The Attleborough Heritage Group and Town Archives will be holding events in Attleborough Church and Church Hall on Saturday 9th and Saturday 16th September from 10am to 4.30pm. with free access to these events. Here are some of the creativity infused highlights organised so far: · An Adult Choir will be singing during the afternoon on the 9th. · A Children’s Choir will be singing on the 16th. · A chance to try hand bell ringing (good fun for children and adults alike). · Approx. 15-minute guided tours of the artwork in the church. · Displays of Art and Old Maps in the Church Hall. · Displays of stories about local writers and musician. · The history of photography (including a magic lantern display). Also, in the church will be demonstrations by local people which will include: fresh and dried flower arranging, leaded glass making, wooden decorative items, planters made from recycled wood, knitting, cross stitch, hand lace making, cardmaking, sweet making, painting, cyanotypes (a type of photography) and hand lace making.
